Protecting Your Hard Drive

What exactly is a hard drive? A hard drive is essentially what stores all the programs of files on your computer/laptop/netbook. There are numerous different types of hard drives but the two commonly used ones are external and internal hard drives.
Internal hard drives are physically inside your computer or laptop. As long as you resist the urge to physically damage your computer, mechanical and superficial damage is easily avoidable. But the same can’t be said for external hard drives. Because external hard drives are not inside computers/laptops, it’s obviously easier for it to be exposed to damage. But how are protective cases necessary for hard drives?
The answer is a resounding: Yes!
Hard drives store data like the way a VHS tape or a cassette tape does with magnetic tape. Instead, hard drives have round, mirror like plates that are covered with the magnetic recording material. There is a spindle that reads the data on the plates while they spin. This is why you can hear your hard drive humming when turned on. These plates are usually made of glass or aluminum. They have to be immaculately clean and spotless. Even the smallest dust particle can cause permanent damage. All hard drives do come with their own protective encasement, but normal wear and tear is inevitable.
Firstly, superficial damage is undesirable to anyone. Who would want disfiguring, unsightly scratches or chipping? And something that may just look like an aesthetic piece might actually serve as a structural or protective piece. This can lead to mechanical damage.
Secondly, mechanical damage is usually irreparable. This can happen if you move your laptop abruptly; or even an innocent slip of the hand and dropping your hard drive or notebook can cause damage. This happens when the plates are damaged by the reading spindle. Also through superficial damage, dust (and other foreign objects) can enter the hard drive and cause damage.
Bottom line is if you have a laptop, netbook, or external hard drive you should protect it with a case, sleeve, or bag. CaseCrown offers a diverse, aesthetically pleasing selection of protection.
